Since I was a kid, I had always been a dreamer. I dream I was as strong as Son Goku, I dreamed I am an Ultraman and I dream I am a Red Ranger. But, as I started to grow older, my dreams tends to lack its imaginative power and this is a big problem for me. Because to design your life, you need to dream and imagine a lot.
As I grow older, I become afraid to dream big as I was a child as I notice what is impossible and what is not. One day, I asked myself, why do I have to be afraid to dream now? I mean, I am an adult now and I can work my ass off to design my life and make my dream a reality. While I was a kid, I can only dream of it. Hence, I need to find a solution for this.
At the forefront of attempts to do just that are Martin Amor and Alex Pellew, who take a fascinating, design-led approach in their recently published book called, The Idea in You: How to Find It, Build It, and Change Your Life had become my problem solver. All the uses techniques below will be very familiar to anyone with design thinking that will allow us to take control of our lives. I already break it down into five simple things of what matter’s the most.
In other words, you need to explore new things and be curious at anything. This is a great way to invoke new ideas. Try out something that you had never try before and practice to become aware of your surrounding. Notice what attract you the most.
Also, sometimes ideas come as fast as it goes, so here is when your journal will become very handy. Jot down anything that comes into your mind no matter how silly it sounds. However, since this is the 21st century you also replace your journal with Evernote or your iPhone notebook. Whatever suits you the most, although I still prefer a classic journal over softcopy one.
Get A Clear Vision of Your Dreams.
Meaning that you start to imagine about your dreams, future lifestyle and make it as vivid as possible. Use pictures, music videos or sounds to make it crystal clear. You may think this step is worth skipping over but I dare you not. Because getting a clear vision of your dream is an essential thing to design your life. Why? Simple. Because it will become your destination point in your subconscious mind.
Never skip this step. Because you are going to do it for a long time in your life. You need to ensure it is something that excites you, something you passionate about and fulfills your life. To do this right, design your life with your emotions intact. Do not discount anything. Nothing is ever “silly”, “stupid” or “never going to happen”. You never know until you try it.
So be creative as possible. Dream like a child and make sure your dream resonate with your emotions. If anyone ever tries to discourage you, avoid them. They have their own dream and you have your own. You don’t want to work 9-5 for 40 years and called it a life, when you can do almost anything if you mind is set to it.
Master a Skill.
This is the step where you start building your life and remember that it is a continuous process. It’s a journey that needs a lot of trial and error, commitment, persistent and self-confidence. However that is still not enough, you also going to need to master a skill that will support your dream. And this will be the foundation to design your life.
For example, my dream is to make Malaya Journal become the greatest blog that will support my family and Muslim across the world. So that I can feed my family, pray calmly in the Masjid and donate more to the Muslims in the warzone. And since it is a blog, the One skill that I need to master is no other than writing.
Therefore we need to keep on lifelong learning. To become so good until they can’t ignore you. Read books, join night classes or take online courses if you have to. Keep learning, keep growing and keep fighting.
Last but not least, here comes the tricky part. Your dream should be focusing on solving other people problems and it can be anything. If you want to save lives, you can become a doctor, a policeman, a firefighter or you can do a research to create an antidote to cure cancer. Your problem can be small but how you solve it doesn’t have to be.
The best example would be from Henry Ford. Because when he asked a lot of people on what do they want? They would answer they want a faster horse. But, you know what he did right? He did not do genetic engineering to produce a faster horse. Instead, he builds a car which is much faster than any horse. In a sense, you solve the problem because you do what is needed to do and not because of chasing money. Money is just the by-products.
“The mind is the limit. As long as the mind can envision the fact that you can do something, you can do it, as long as you really believe it 100%,” ― Arnold Schwarzenegger
This isn’t delusional. Although some people may say you are but it doesn’t matter. After all, it is your life and dream. In fact, all of these steps are essential to design your life. Even when I writing this blog, I dreamed that my blog will have 100,000 views per month and include in top 50 most famous website in Washington Post.
It’s crazy to think of it, but it’s fine. Because everything begins with the ends in minds. If you did not believe you can do it, then who will. I do know that it will take a lot of time and efforts. But as long as I keep collecting ideas, have a clear destination, continue my craftmanship and solve a problem then I can do it. Never limit yourself. Dream so big until the normal people think your crazy.
